Star Wars Audio Books for sale in iTunes

starwarsaudiobooks.jpg

I mentioned this on our sister blog, Apple Gazette today, but I think it that you Forever Geek readers will want to know about it too...so...

I'm very excited to report that Star Wars audio books are now available on iTunes...and there are a TON of them. 67 titles in all. The variety of titles range from novelizations of the films to the Jedi Order series and even further reaches into the Expanded Universe. There is enough Star Wars content here to keep you listening for years!

One thing some may consider a drawback is that almost all of the title are the Abridged audio versions. Now, I feel that it is important to point out one fact about novels that not everyone is aware of...Novels are padded. Almost always. Publishers need books to reach certain page lengths for printing purposes...and if the story isn't long enough...the author has to add content until it is....SO...Abridged is not always a bad thing...and I don't think you're going to miss too much by listening to only 3 to 6 hours of story instead of 8.

Prices range from $12.95 to $18.95 depending on length, with the unabridged books coming in at $25.95-$31.95.

You can Click Here to launch iTunes and be taken directly to the Star Wars Audio Book page.

Readius Rollable Display puts one more nail in Paper's Coffin

Now, before you get upset by the headline, I'm being facetious. I personally don't think paper will every completely die...but things like the Sony's Reader and Polymer Vision's Readius could - without a doubt - impact the print world very soon.

The extremely compact, and thin device has a screen appearance that is apparently just like looking at paper (or at least as close as "view screens" have come thus far). It is not yet known when you'll be able to buy a Readius, and I'm, certain it will be expensive, but this little device is the first step into some really interesting future devices.

Why People Take Off Their Clothes When They’re Literally Freezing to Death

Pop Tart

A funny thing happens to people when they get hypothermia. Many of them strip off their clothes as one of their last acts before they die. This is common phenomena among fatal hypothermia cases and is known as ‘paradoxical undressing’. Why in the world would someone who is literally freezing to death take of their clothes?

Here’s the answer from SurvivalTopics.com.

Now the key to what causes paradoxical undressing. Vasoconstriction occurs when the smooth muscles within the vasculature contract. This effort requires a steady input of energy in the form of glucose from the body’s energy stores. However, due to a lack of blood now traveling to these muscles, they eventually tire. As the muscles of the constricted blood vessels run out of energy, they fatigue, relax, and open up. This is known as vasodilation.

With vasodilation of the blood vessels, an infusion of warm blood from the core of the body rushes into the peripheral extremities. This causes the hypothermia victim to feel overly warm and to start shedding layers of clothing, contrary to the reality that their body temperature is continuing to drop.

The victim’s warm blood rushing from their core, coupled with the removal of warm clothing, causes their body temperature to fall even faster. This serves to hasten death from hypothermia and results in another case of paradoxical undressing.

Hallmark Rolls out Cards for Cancer, Eating Disorders and Depression

Hallmark Store

Last Thursday Hallmark launched a new line of cards for more serious topics, such as depression, eating disorders and cancer. The 176 card collection, called Journeys, is now carried in their 3800 Gold Crown stores. Cynthia Musick, the editorial director who oversaw Journeys, said the cards’ writing provides more personal messages of support, encouragement and hope.

Nothing says you care like a $3.00 card that took 5 minutes to pick out.

“Cancer is a villain who doesn’t play fair … but it can’t dim your spirit, and it can’t silence prayer.”

A cheesy cancer rhyme! Ugh…

Now, I live in Kansas City, so I have dear friends and family who work at Hallmark and I like some of the things that company does. Like provide a paycheck to some of my friends and family. I also really like their ‘Fresh Ink’ cards. But this seems like gross profiteering off of people’s most troublesome sorrows.

I’d also like to add that if I’m ever clinically depressed and someone buys me a greeting card specifically addressing my depression in a rhyming manner, I might just end it all right there in front of them.

Britney goes from Bald Eagle to Bald Head

Britney Spears has more than lost it. After a full day of reports of whether or not she was in rehab she showed up in Los Angeles with a freaking BALD HEAD. Britney showed up at a tattoo parlor in Sherman Oaks with a shaved bald head. She needs to get in rehab if she wasn’t and get on some anti-depressants. So sad that Kevin Federline is looking like the sane one now.

Britney’s mop of hair being sold on Ebay

Photo: Britney Spears Dead Hair

There is always a market for anything connected with a celebrity….even their dead hair. Allie is Wired is reporting that the salon where Britney Spears shaved her head at is selling the dark locks on Ebay. Also included is her Red Bull can and Bic lighter.

My guess, is that US Weekly, In Touch, OK, Star or some other celebrity magazine will purchase the hair and have it tested for drugs - so they can officially report on what drugs she’s been taking!

I believe Allie is right on with her prediction. And honestly it will be very intriguing to see what drugs she was on when she decided to become Sigourney Weaver in Alien.

The current bidding as of this posting is $1,100,000.00 dollars which for the non math geeks is just over $1 million dollars. View the Ebay Auction for Brit’s hair. The bidding will only last for two more days. Look for the final bidding to reach nearly $2 million dollars or possibly $5 million if a big investor comes in.

Here is what the Ebay listing says:

This is the auction you have been waiting for. I am selling the hair as well as the 3/4 full can of Redbull Britney Spears was drinking and her blue Bic Lighter. I am selling this on behalf of Esther and her family.

We are offering it for sale here at what we feel is a realistic price. This is a piece of history that can not be duplicated.

Healthbolt Appears in Cram Magazine, Issues #2 and #3

CRAM Magazine, a free, user driven .pdf publication, just released it’s third issue. My Getting Fit with Aristotle post appears on page 14.

I also had What Happens to Your Body if You Drink a Coke Right Now? appear in issue #2. I like the guys at CRAM, and it’s a good mag. The magazine is young, in fact they’re younger than Healthbolt.net, which is really saying something.

I do have to apologize to Tim Forden, CRAM’s editor, for still having nothing in to him for his contributors page. It’s my loss really, I could be tooting my own horn, but instead I just have my byline.

Anyway, cruise over there and give them some luvin’.

FA Cup Round-up

Man Utd 1-1 Reading
Reading forced a replay against Manchester United on Saturday with a 1-1 draw after a Brynjar Bjorn Gunnarsson header cancelled out Michael Carrick's opener in a scrappy affair in front of over 70,000 supporters at Old Trafford.

Chelsea 4-0 Norwich
Chelsea cruised into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory over Norwich City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The result was a bit harsh on Norwich however, as they fought bravely and only conceded two of their goals in stoppage time.

WBA 2-2 Middlesbrough
Championship side West Bromwich Albion twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Premiership side Middlesbrough in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Arsenal 0-0 Blackburn
Brad Friedel pulled off a wonderful double save in the dying minutes to earn his side a replay as they held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday

Watford 1-0 Ipswich
Damien Francis scored a late winner as Premiership Watford edged past 10-man Ipswich to book their place in the last eight of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win. Championship Ipswich - who had George O'Callaghan sent off just before half-time - will count themselves unlucky not to have forced a replay.

Bridge to Terabithia - Review

Bridge to Terabithia

The trailers and television spots for this film gave me the impression that it was going to be another “Harry Potter” or, more appropriately, another “Chronicles of Narnia”. You know, a movie where a group of adorable kids travel to a beautiful fantasy world and engage in a slew of amazing adventures, jam-packed with gorgeous special effects and CGI from start to finish.

Well, that’s not what this movie is like at all, but I’m sure that everyone who read the book (ie: not me) already knew this. So, even though this movie is only somewhat similar to what the marketing campaign promised, is it any good? Yeah, actually, it’s pretty good.

Jess (Josh Hutcherson) is a young boy with a gift for creative art but is constantly forced to repress his imagination by his father (Robert Patrick), who wants him to “keep his head out of the clouds”. Things change when a new girl, Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), arrives at school. Leslie is the daughter of two fiction authors and has a wild imagination. Gradually, she helps Jess set his imagination free and the pair become fast friends. Together, Jess and Leslie create their own fantasy world known as Terabithia, where they use their imaginations to escape from reality as well as devise means to conquer their own personal problems.

At first I was disappointed with the film because I felt like I’d been snookered by a very misleading marketing campaign. Then, as I began to understand the real point of the movie, I came to appreciate it. For the most part, anyway.

“Bridge to Terabithia” is for kids, more-so than “Narnia” and “Harry Potter”. It is not crawling with special effects like the trailers imply (in fact, just about all the special effects in the film are shown in the trailers), but instead is a much more personal tale about two close friends growing up and making the most of the time they have together. For at least the first half of the film, yes, the entirety of the plot is basically two kids frolicking in the woods and having imaginary adventures. Kind of like live action role-players, only okay, because they’re children and not mentally-stunted 30 year-olds.

I was a bit “Meh” through the first half. I could tell it was a good movie for kids, and I’m sure if I’d been a ten year old I would’ve been having a great time, but I didn’t feel like I was in the right target audience. Then the big twist happened halfway through and I was in shock. I won’t say any more about it for those of you who don’t want spoilers, but I will say that it was an emotionally thrashing moment which hits you like a bus (if you haven’t read the book or had it spoiled for you, anyway). It was here where I understood the movie’s true lesson, or at least, the dominating one: treasure every moment of your childhood and never let the good memories escape.

It’s kind of hard to talk about the movie (the parts I really liked, anyway), because I don’t want to spoil it. So I’ll talk about something else.

The special effects provided by Walden Media (the “Lord of the Rings” people), as sparingly as they’re used, are up to their usual standards of quality. The fantastic creatures and landscapes which make-up Terabithia are quite cartoonish, but they’re supposed to represent the imagination of a child, so it’s perfectly appropriate.

There’s also the acting from the two lead kids, which impressed me quite a bit. AnnaSophia Robb shines brightest as the wild and rambunctious one, not coming off anywhere near as annoying as characters of her archetype usually do. Josh Hutcherson also carries his role quite well, playing a boy with a strong imagination but crippling amounts of responsibility. The kids who played the supporting characters, such as school bullies and what-not, aren’t so notable. They’re your typical child actors, so I’m not going to rag on them for being underwhelming.

One of the film’s other lessons is one I felt rather strongly about: kids, use your freaking imaginations! In this age of video games where fantasies are mass-produced by corporations and kids are getting out and playing with each other less and less, a movie that comes along and inspires kids to play “pretend” is quite welcome. It was always my favorite game, growing up. The film captures what having fun as a kid and using your imagination is like, and as an adult whose not allowed to do that anymore, I almost found myself longing for simpler (and more fun) times.

So if you’re expecting sword, sorcery and epic quests from “Bridge to Terabithia”, I’m sorry, but you aren’t going to find them here. Now, if you have kids and you want to inspire them to go outside and play, then this is more up your alley.

Ghost Rider (2007): Review

Ghost Rider 2007

I first encountered Ghost Rider back in the early 90’s at, oh, age 8 or 9. What drew me to the character was pretty much what draws everyone to the character, at least at first. Ghost Rider looks really, really cool. Flaming motorcycles, blazing skulls, black leather, chains…visually, Ghost Rider is like an awesomeness overload. So, of course, Ghost Rider on the big screen, in live action, is a sight to behold. Visually-speaking, that is. As we all know, a movie can’t survive on visuals alone, and while I still enjoyed the heck out of this flick, I won’t deny it had some troubles.

At a young age, stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) sold his soul to Mephistopheles (Peter Fonda) to save the life of his ailing father. Mephistopheles betrayed him and vowed to one day return to take what is his. Years later, Johnny Blaze has become America’s top stunt cyclist, yet he feels something is missing. His old flame, Roxanne Simpson (Eva Mendez), walks back into his life and Johnny suddenly believes he has gotten his second chance. Not quite. Someone else has come back into his life, Mephistopheles, who forces Johnny to fulfill his end of the bargain. Johnny is suddenly and painfully transformed into the skull-faced Spirit of Vengeance: Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider is charged with the task of hunting down and destroying Mephistopheles’ rebel son, Blackheart, and his trio of elemental demons. At stake are the souls of a thousand evil men, enough to tip the balance of power. Johnny is joined by the Caretaker (Sam Elliot), a mysterious guide who knows more than he lets on.

Screen writer and Director Mark Steven Johnson deserves some serious credit; he really knows his stuff when it comes to Ghost Rider. This movie manages to pack in nods and elements from just about every era of the Marvel comic, fusing the different versions of the character into a sort of hybrid “Ultimate Ghost Rider” (ironically, Ghost Rider has yet to appear in Marvel’s “Ultimate” line of comics). You’ve got Johnny Blaze, the 70’s Ghost Rider, who dresses like Danny Ketch, the 90’s Ghost Rider, with references to Carter Slade, the Western Ghost Rider who predated them both (though, in the comic continuity, had nothing to do with the Ghost Rider curse). There are lots more additions, including Danny’s classic “Penance Stare” and Johnny’s Hellfire shotgun which he used during the “Blaze” comic series in the 90’s (when he went through that brief cyborg phase). It’s like a total Ghost Rider orgasm.

Yet, despite working with so many decades worth of material, Johnson crafted a very strong script which gets just about everything right. Some of the more convoluted aspects of the Ghost Ride are ignored (though not contradicted), such as Noble Cale and Zarathos. But this is a 90 minute movie, so some content shearing is all-together expected. Oddly, they choose to refer to Ghost Rider’s creator as “Mephistopheles” rather than “Mephisto” (his name from the comics), but I just assume that choice was made because the former name is more well-known amongst the general public.

The script is strong and the story and characters stay true to their roots…so what could possibly be wrong with this film? Unfortunately, the problem lies with most of the cast. Nicholas Cage wouldn’t have been my first choice for the character, though he isn’t so awful as Johnny as he is unremarkable. He interjects moments of his trademarked weird sense of humor, which lightens things up (as cool as Ghost Rider is, he’s not one to take seriously) but simultaneously takes you out of the experience because all you can think is “Wow, that’s vintage Nicholas Cage”. Eva Mendez is also a rather weak link, mostly because she’s a pretty weak actress. It’s almost as if Johnson knew this and tries to make up for her flat, amateurish acting with lots of plunging necklines and booty shots. It helps but…not a whole lot. Wes Bentley also delivers an underwhelming performance as Blackheart, delivering some cheesy dialogue a bit too poorly for it to even have comedic value.

So, “great script, bad acting”. What is there left to tip the scales? The aforementioned “Holy crap, Ghost Rider looks awesome!” factor comes into play right about here. While the CGI isn’t up to Lord of the Rings standards, I found it to be more than acceptable. Every scene with Ghost Rider is joyous, thanks not only to how cool he looks but to his downright lunatic personality. Ghost Rider cackles like a madman with an extremely sinister edge to him. This isn’t the friendly Ghost Rider from the 70’s, this guy is nuts. The bits where he blazes down the street in his flaming chopper, melting parking meters and igniting the gas tanks of parked cars is just absolute eye candy. Johnny Cage may come across as a bit weak, but Ghost Rider has enough personality for the both of them.

I suppose the only weak point of the visuals stem from the only weak point of the script: no seriously balls-to-the-wall fight sequences. The bits where Ghost Rider drives up skyscrapers and sets fire to everything in sight are plenty adrenaline-pumping, but the villains in the movie leave a bit to be desired. The Elemental Demons fair very poorly against Ghost Rider, being seriously out-matched, so none of them provide any real sport. There’s Blackheart, but most of that final battle is between him and Johnny Blaze.

Still, there’s always the sequel and the possibility of some more worthy villains, such as Vengeance. And I do so hope they make about a million of these, just so long as the Johnny Blaze-to-Ghost Rider ratio leans decidedly more in the direction of Ghost Rider.

This is a great popcorn flick and an almost all-around worthy adaptation of the comic.

Michelle Ryan is the new Bionic Woman

_42568909_michelleryan_203longpa.jpg

The BBC reported earlier this week that British actress Michelle Ryan has been cast as cyborg/tennis pro (yes, you read that right) Jaime Summers in NBC's proposed re-imagining of "The Bionic Woman."

Michelle (22) most recently appeared in the British Romantic comedy Cashback, and will soon be on ITV co-starring with Billie Piper (of Doctor Who fame) in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park.

The original Bionic Woman was played by Linsdey Wagner, and began in 1976. In the series, which was a spin off from the Six Million Dollar Man, the character had Bionic limbs that gave her super speed and strength, and a bionic ear that gave her super hearing powers.

I'm pretty sure the new series will bare little resemblance to the original.

If you, like yours truly, spend a lot of time by your computer, then you have probably felt at least once a burning pain in your eyes, or blurry vision. Thankfully, there are small exercises or things you can to help reduce this pain and prevent CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome).

Do you spend a lot of time in front of the computer?

Ever rub your eyes and want to stop working?

You may be experiencing Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), the official diagnosis given to a range of symptoms that include:

  • burning
  • dry and strained eyes
  • headache
  • neck ache
  • blurred vision

CVS, more commonly known as computer eyestrain, is due to over- or misuse of computer monitors, bad lighting and other environmental and ergonomic factors.

Stubborn, persistent, and regular physical discomfort due to one or more of these symptoms cuts your productivity sharply over time.

Another small tip that I use from time to time is close your eyes once in a while and roll them around with your eyelids closed. This helps maintain your eyes humid and also lets them rest a little bit.

Hack Your Feelings Into Productive Energy in 6 Steps

Stuart Smalley

A lot of people (specifically males) are trained from birth to believe that feelings are a sign of weakness. We’re always told not to let our feelings “get in the way.”

I find this to be a ridiculous concept. If you take into account all the factors that can affect your health, the way you “feel” is certainly not near the bottom of that list. In fact, I’d say it was rather near the top.

Being in a chronic state of fear or frustration can put huge amounts of stress on your body and the systems it uses to keep you running smoothly. Ignoring or flat out denying the way you feel about a situation is destructive and it’s a time bomb.

Your feelings may come out later as a heart attack or mental breakdown, but at some point or another your feelings will express themselves. It’s just a question of how and when.

So, take control of this process of feeling manifestation. I’m not suggesting you can control your feelings, but I am suggesting that you recognize them, validate them and then you can “deflect” or “redirect” that energy into something productive.

1. Label your feelings, rather than labeling people or situations.
“I feel impatient.” vs “This is ridiculous.”
“I feel hurt and bitter”. vs. “You are an insensitive jerk.”
“I feel afraid.” vs. “You are driving like a idiot.”

2. Take responsibility for your feelings.
“I feel jealous.” vs. “You are making me jealous.”

3. Use those feelings to help them make decisions.
“How will I feel if I do this?”
“How will I feel if I don’t?”

4. Feel energized, not angry.
Use your anger to help you feel energized to take productive action.

5. Practice getting a positive value from your negative emotions.
Ask yourself: “How do I feel?” and “What would help me feel better?”

6. When possible, avoid people who invalidate you, or don’t respect your feelings.
This may not ever be possible, but when it is, it will save you lots of grief.

“This cigarette is free, but there’s one catch! It’s gonna ruin your smoking career. Be Smart Just Quit!” By Tony (Two Hawks), San Jose, California, USA.

From the site:

TheArtOfQuitting.com is a creative platform for still-smokers. It’s a place where you can find and share the inspiration to quit. Because to keep smoking is easy, but to quit and stay that way is an art. Submit your quit-smoking statement. Do it to motivate yourself and to inspire others.

This is an absolutely brilliant idea. Focusing your energies on something else while quitting is an effective strategy for some people and I can see this kicking off an art habit while dropping a deadly habit.

Former Doctor Who Joins "Dark" Cast

Eccleston_Christopher_pic.jpg

You know, I kinda thought it was a mistake for Christopher Eccleston is quit Doctor Who after only one season. It seemed like he'd done such an interesting job with the part that it was going to be hard to escape typecasting - even with that short period of time in the role.

Eccleston, however, has been doing pretty darn well for himself since leaving the hit UK series. He is currently on Heroes (playing an Invisible Man) and has now joined the cast of "The Dark Is Rising", an adaption of Susan Cooper's best-selling fantasy books helmed by 20th Century Fox and Walden Media according to the Sci-Fi Wire.

He's still a long way from having the notoriety that he had as The Doctor, but this guy is seriously talented, and I hope we see him on various screens for years to come.

American Children Are Among the Worst Off in The Industrialized World

Starting Line

According to the latest UNICEF report, American children are among the worst off in the industrialized world. The United States ranks at the bottom, along with Great Britain, when it comes to the well-being of our children.

The U.S. ranked dead last among 21 “developed” nations for health and safety. The report measures six categories: material wealth, health and safety, education, peer and family relationships, behaviors and risks, and young people’s own subjective sense of well-being. “The United Kingdom and the United States find themselves in the bottom third of the rankings for five of the six dimensions reviewed,” UNICEF said in a summary to the report, titled “Child Well-Being in Rich Countries.” The Netherlands places in the top ten in all categories to come out on top in this report, followed by Sweden, Denmark and Finland. These northern European countries kick our collective butt.

But what about our Gross National Product, you might ask? Americans have lots of money, right? The report concluded that there was no obvious relationship between levels of child well-being and per-capita gross domestic product.

You mean it’s not all about having the most STUFF after all? One teen interviewed stated that Britain and the U.S. focus on materialism, while people in “less developed” countries are “hungry” for education and a feeling of self accomplishment. “The Czech Republic, for example, achieves a higher overall rank for child well-being than several much wealthier countries including France, Austria, the United States and the United Kingdom.”

Cool or simply weird Japanese apartment

The most recent work from New York based designers Arakawa and Gin is a most unusual apartment block based in Mitaka, Tokyo. Reversible Destiny Lofts are eye-catching brightly painted lofts that look like a McDonald's play ground through the eyes of someone on LSD. The architecture looks like the aftermath of a size 3 earthquake, a little shaken and lopsided.

There is a reason behind the designers madness however. Arakawa believes that comfort makes you grow old quick, and that residents, in particular elderly ones, need to be kept on their toes by having their interiors physically challenge them. Lopsided floors force the resident to maintain a good sense of balance , strangely located light switches insist we feel around for the light, whilst small veranda doors will ask you to crawl and bend to enter.

How much does this physical challenge cost? Priced at US$750,000 each, the houses are three times more expensive than other apartments in the same neighborhood!

More photographs including pictures of its interior can be found after the jump.

I was a little bored one day and thought I’d try to find fifty fun facts about credit cards that I didn’t know before hand and put them all in once place for you all to munch on and enjoy over the weekend. Some of the things I already knew, like the AMEX Centurion card has a $2500 annual fee and a $250,000 annual spend requirement, but others I didn’t, like how American Express started off as a shipping company and later branched out into financial services.

I broke the fun facts into these general categories: Historical Nuggets (with subcategories for each major card company), Useful Things That Make You Go Hmmmm…, Technobabbliciousness, Legal Ways You’ve Been Hosed & Un-Hosed, and Department of Holy Crap They Make A Ton of $. Historical Nuggets obviously covers the history of cards and the various companies. The Useful Things That Make You Go Hmmmm… covers some useful consumer information that may one day come in handy in your daily life. Technobabbliciousness covers some interesting facts about the technology behind credit cards. Legal Ways You’ve Been Hosed & Un-Hosed covers various court rulings and other legalese that explain why the environment is the way it is (like ridiculous fees and interest rates!). Finally, Department of Holy Crap They Make A Ton of $ is just a collection of mind-boggling statistics that should make you think twice about starting your own credit card company.

Historical Nuggets

1 In the beginning, credit cards were just charge accounts, offered by individual stores and only usable at those stores. The first credit card that could be used at multiple locations was offered by The Diner’s Club in 1950. (full story)
2 Diners Club issued that first card to only two hundred customers and it could only be used at twenty seven restaurants in New York City.

American Express History

3 American Express started off as a shipping company in 1850, shipping products across the United States and capitalizing on the limited reach and slow speed of the United States Postal Service. Their main customers were banks and they shipped various financial instruments like stock certificates and other notes. They began selling money orders and traveler’s checks in 1882 and issued its first credit card in 1958. (full history)
4 In 1984, American Express billed their Platinum Card as extremely exclusive and it had an annual fee of $250 ($484.84 in 2006 dollars). Today, the extremely exclusive card for American Express is their black Centurion card with a $2,500 annual fee! (and requirement to spend $250,000 a year)

MasterCard & Visa History

5 MasterCard and Visa are networks of banks and financial institutions. American Express is its own company and Discover Card is a subsidiary Morgan Stanley (who is spinning off the business).
6 Visa was originally called BankAmericard, a card offered by Bank of America in 1958 in California. By 1970, they had created an association, called the National BankAmericard, Inc., of all the US Banks that issued the BankAmericard. It wasn’t renamed to Visa until 1976. (full history)
7 Visa actually stands Visa International Service Association.
8 The Visa logo colors were chosen because the blue represented the sky and the gold represented color of the hills in California where Bank of America was founded. (from Wikipedia).
9 Originally formed under the name Interbank Card Association and they acquired the MasterCharge brand and logo in 1969. MasterCharge was originally formed by four California banks in 1967, who joined together to form the Western States Bankcard Association to battle the BankAmericard of Bank of America. MasterCharge was renamed MasterCard in 1979.
10 In 1984, MasterCard was the first to use a hologram on its cards to deter fraud.

Discover Card History

11 Discover Card was introduced by Sears in 1985 and gained notoriety because it charged no annual fee.
12 At the time, Sears also owned the brokerage Dean Witter Reynolds Organization and the Discover brand was integrated into that organization. When Dean Witter merged with Morgan Stanley in 1997, Discover went along for the ride.

Useful Things That Make You Go Hmmmm…

13 Wonder why minimum payments are so low? It allows consumer to carry more debt while keeping to the same low minimum payment. You can give someone with the ability to pay $100 per month a credit limit as high as $5,000 if they only had to pay 2% a month. If the minimum payment were 5%, they could only have a credit limit of $2,000. The lower the minimum payment, the deeper in debt someone could be in.
14 It is against the merchant agreements of MC, Visa, and AMEX, for a vendor to require you to provide your phone number, home address, or other personal information for credit card transactions. In fact, some states make it illegal for them to require it. (It’s not illegal to ask, but it is if they refuse to process the transaction without that information)
15 Under the merchant agreements of MC, Visa, Discover Card and AMEX, you do not need to present a driver’s license in order to complete a credit card transaction.
16 Under the merchant agreements of MC, Visa, and Discover Card, vendors may not require a minimum purchase amount. Under AMEX, it’s more of a hint that the vendor shouldn’t put up any barriers to use but AMEX also has a discrimination rule, so if there is no minimum amount for MC/Visa, there cannot be a minimum amount for AMEX. (Consumerist has all the relevant merchant agreements consolidated)
17 Under the merchant agreements of MC, Visa, and Discover Card, vendors may not charge a surcharge for using the card (the anti-discrimination rules still apply for AMEX). In some states, it is actually illegal to charge a surcharge for credit card purchases. This rule does not apply to government agencies.
18 On the flip side, offering a discount for cash payment (over credit card payment) is permitted by all of the card companies (looooophole!).
19 A merchant may, on taking a personal check, require that you offer a credit card number. It is against merchant agreements to charge a credit card in the event of a bounced check (and it’s also very dangerous to have all that juicy information on one little slip of paper, plus this may also be illegal in your state).
20 You can lower your interest rate with a phone call. Credit card companies are like cell phone and cable companies, they’re afraid you’ll leave and join with one of their competitors. Use this to your advantage by comparing offers from other credit cards and bringing this information to your credit company.
21 When you use your card, you agree to the cardholder agreement, you don’t have to sign anything. If you get an update to the agreement, you also agree to the updates once you use your card.
22 A fixed interest rate on a credit card can change with only 15 days of notice. Fixed is not fixed in the sense that a mortgage loan is fixed, it’s fixed in the sense that the credit card company can change it with only 15 days notice!
23 If you have multiple balances with different interest rates on one card, payments are generally applied to the balance with the lower interest rate. You will have no choice in the matter and you cannot request it be made to the higher balance. So if you have a $100 balance at 19.99% and a $5,000 balance at 4.99%, your payments apply to the $5,000 at 4.99% first. A note about this will be in your agreement.
24 The credit card sale process works as follows: The vendor sends an authorization request for the value of the sale. The credit card company checks the card limit and reduces the credit limit by that amount (it puts a “hold” or a “block”) and sends the vendor electronic confirmation that the card is good. The vendor sends a deposit transaction or a sale transaction. The credit card company sends the money. This process is usually quick and painless… with the following exceptions:
25 Hotels and rental car agencies usually send an authorization request for the estimated cost of your stay or rental and they keep this “block” on your card for 10 to 15 days (independent of how long you actually stay there) even if you pay with something else.
26 When you use a credit card at a gas pump, the pump authorizes the purchase for something in the neighborhood of $50 first. So if you have less than $50 left on your limit, the pump will reject your purchase attempt.
27 Restaurants typically will authorize a credit card purchase for the amount of the bill plus 25% (for gratuity), so again, if your limit can’t handle the extra 25%, the purchase transaction will be rejected.

Technobabbliciousness

28 Ever notice all your credit cards are of uniform shape and size? Their dimensions are governed by the ISO 7810 standard, an international standard for identification cards. Banking cards, as well as driver’s licenses and retail cards, follow ID-1 (passports follow ID-3). If your card has a smart chip, it follows ISO 7816, and if it has RFID, it follows ISO 14443.
29 The expiration date on the card is “fake.” You can still use the card after its expiration date because the card number on your replacement will be the same. The reason why cards do expire varies from company to company but mostly it’s because the credit cards take a lot of abuse and just need replacing (they estimate the magnetic strip is good for only about three or four years of swiping).
30 Interested to know what’s on the magnetic stripe? Check out this breakdown of the three tracks on Wikipedia (the rest of the page explains other magnetic stripes).
31 There are generally two types of magnetic strips, high-coercivity and low-coercivity, with the high-coercivity being stronger and more durable (also requiring more expensive equipment to handle). (from Wikipedia)
32 Higher-coercivity are usually black and low-coercivity strips are a dark brown, but there are special cases such as American Express’ patented silver colored magnetic strip.
33 Hotel keys and other low-coercivity stripped cards are susceptible to being scrambled by a weak magnetic force, including cell phones.
34 Credit card numbers conform to the Luhn algorithm, which is just a simple checksum test on the number. What you do is start from the right and double each second digit (1111 becomes 2121), then add them all together, and you should end with a number evenly divisible by ten. If it doesn’t, it’s not a valid credit card number.
35 The first digit of the number is the Major Industry Identifier. 1/2 are for airlines, 3 is for travel/entertainment, 4/5 for banking and financial, 6 for merchandizing and financial, 7 for petroleum, 8 for telecommunications. 0 and 9 are for other assignments but you’ll likely never see them. If you look at an American Express card, you’ll see it starts with a 3, a throwback to their travel/entertainment roots.
36 The first six digits will correspond to the issuer, including the major industry identifier. 34xxxx/37xxxx are for American Express, 4xxxxx is for Visa, 51-55xxxx is for MasterCard, and 6011xx is for Discover.
37 The rest of the digits (except the last one, which is a checksum digit) is your account number.

Legal Ways You’ve Been Hosed & Un-Hosed

38 Minors, those under the age of 18, are not obligated to pay back any charges to their credit cards (unless a parent co-signs, but then its the parent who is on the hook) because they are not allowed to enter into a binding contract.
39 If there are unauthorized charges on your card, you’re on the hook for $50 each, maximum (unless your agreement says you are responsible for less, you cannot be responsible for more). If you report your card missing and an unauthorized charge appears after you’ve reported it, you are liable for $0.
40 By law, you are only allowed to dispute charges for “unsatisfactory goods or services” if you made the purchase in your home state or within 100 miles of your billing address and the purchase was for more than $50. (and if you’ve made a good faith attempt to resolve it with the vendor) While a credit card company may not hold you to this, they are protected by the law for purchases outside your home state/100 mile radius.
41 Credit card companies are prohibited by law from sending you a card that you didn’t ask for, unless it’s a renewal or a substitute card. If you get a credit card you didn’t apply for, contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint.
42 A common clause in most user/member agreements is that the cardholder waives their right to sue the credit card company. The cardholder must instead go through a binding arbitration hearing with the credit card company and cannot take the company to court or participate in a class action suit.
43 Before 1996 and the Supreme Court case Smiley vs. Citibank (517 U.S. 735, Thanks j), there were restrictions on how much a credit card company could charge for a late payment. The ruling in Smiley vs. Citibank lifted that restriction and fees that were once around $5-$10 jumped to $30 or more today.
44 There is no federal law regulating the rate of interest a credit card company can charge! The federal government use to regulate but repealed those laws during the Great Depression and never put them back in place, they now rely on the states to handle usury.
45 In the Supreme Court case Marquette National Bank v. First of Omaha Service Corp (439 U.S. 299, Thanks j) in 1978, the Court decided that national banks only need to follow the usury laws of the state they are headquartered in, not the state in which their customer resides.
46 Credit card companies are all headquartered in states with high or no cap on interest rates. American Express is located in Utah (no cap), Bank of America is in Arizona (36%), Citibank is in South Dakota (no cap), Capital One is in Virginia (no cap), Providian is in New Hampshire (no cap), and JP Morgan Chase, MBNA (now Bank of America), Morgan Stanley/Discover, and HSBC are all located in Delaware (no cap).

Department of Holy Crap They Make A Ton of $$$$$

47 Each American household receives approximately 6 offers a month. The typical response rate is .33% (one third of one percent). You can opt out of these mailings via OptOutPrescreen.
48 Each direct mailing acquisition costs approximately $80, according to R.K. Hammer, bank card advisory firm.
49 Credit card companies earned $90.1B in interest in 2006, up from $89.4B the year before (according to R.K. Hammer).
50 Credit card companies earned $55.2B in fees in 2006, up from $54.8B the year before (according to R.K. Hammer).

Bonus Fun Fact:
Mastercard’s market capitalization is a whopping $14.24B, American Express’s stands at $71.62B, and Morgan Stanley stands at $86.40B. Visa is not publicly traded (yet). While you can’t compare their market caps because such a large part of Amex and Morgan Stanley’s businesses are not in credit cards, it’s still interesting to look at the numbers. Incidentally, Bank of America has a market cap of $239.17B. (These figures as of 1/11/07)

How biological clocks workPermalink

Science has known for decades that biological clocks govern the behavior of everything from humans to lowly bread mold. These ticking timekeepers hold the key to many diseases, annoy passengers on intercontinental flights and can mean life or death for small creatures trying to survive in nature.

Despite the importance of biological clocks, their mechanisms have remained unclear. Now, a team of researchers from the University of Georgia has produced the first working model that explains how biological clocks work.

[More:]

"When the clock goes awry in mammals, it can lead to many diseases, ranging from cancer and sleep disorders to heart and lung disease," said Jonathan Arnold, a professor in the department of genetics and leader of the research. "It is very important that we know how the clock works at the molecular level."

The research will be published this week in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Arnold's co-authors on the paper were members of a UGA interdisciplinary team, though several have now moved on to other positions. They include: Heinz-Bernd Schuttler, professor of physics and astronomy at UGA; Yihai Yu, a former graduate student in physics, now working in industry; Wubei Dong, a postdoctoral fellow in Arnold's lab in genetics; Cara Altimus, a former UGA undergraduate now a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University; Xiaojia Tang, a doctoral student in Shuttler's lab; James Griffith, Arnold's research coordinator, who is supported by funds from the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Melissa Morello, also a former UGA undergrad, now a student at the Medical College of Georgia; and Lisa Dudek, also a former undergraduate in physics and now a graduate student at UCLA.

Because of the importance of biological clocks to survival and health, evolution has built them into an astoundingly diverse array of organisms, including bacteria and humans. These clocks make it possible for organisms to "tell time," even in the absence of such stimuli as temperature changes or daylight.

The UGA team discovered how three genes in Neurospora crassa—bread mold—make such a clock tick at the molecular level. The paper in PNAS describes how to identify genetic networks and show how the tools of systems biology can yield insights into what makes the clock tick.

"Much of what we know about the biological clock comes from the study of Neurospora," said Arnold, "so the insights on this clock mechanism are likely to provide insights into clocks of other organisms."

The discovery also has broad implications for understanding biochemical signaling and other regulatory processes in cells, said Arnold.

Before this research, there has been little experimental support for any of the many existing models of the biological clock. The UGA team studied actions of three genes in Neurospora: white-collar-1, white-collar-2 and frequency. The team found that the products of these three genes constitute the building blocks of a biological clock. The discovery crosses species boundaries, since human beings have a gene analogous to white-collar-1.

A number of human diseases are associated with genes under control of the biological clock. For instance, a gene called PAI-1 is involved with early-morning heart attacks. Another gene called DBP affects sleep cycles. Both are controlled by clock genes.

"One of the most interesting parts of the research is that the biological clock shows how a complex trait can emerge from the interaction of even a small number of gene regulatory elements," said Arnold.
